Does the UK have a 4 Day Work Week?
The UK has been the home to the world’s largest and longest 4 day work week trials. In 2022, 61 companies embarked on their time transformation journeys. Over 90% of those are still working a 4 day week, two years later.
Despite the UK being one of the first countries to run a large national trial, they are no stranger to controversy surrounding the 4 day week. Let’s get into the nuts and bolts of reduced hours working in the UK.
Which companies are already working a 4 day work week in the UK?
While a nationwide 4 day work week policy remains a vision for the future, some trailblazers in the UK are already turning this dream into reality. From innovative tech startups in Shoreditch to creative agencies in Manchester, a select group of companies has embraced a shorter work week.
Among them, Radioactive PR, a Gloucestershire-based public relations firm, and MRL Consulting Group, specializing in high-tech recruitment in Brighton, stand out for their pioneering approaches. They report happier, more focused teams, and surprisingly, often the same or even better productivity levels.
Could this be the future of work? With examples like Perpetual Guardian, which operates in the UK and made headlines for its successful implementation, Waterwise, an environmental charity, and Tyler Grange, to foster creativity and reduce carbon emissions.
Even Platten’s Fish and Chips in Wells-next-the-Sea has jumped on board, proving traditional businesses can also innovate with working hours.
These companies are not just experimenting; they're leading a significant shift towards what many hope will become a widespread adoption of the 4 day work week across the country.
What is happening with South Cambridgeshire District Council’s 4 day work week?
It’s not all plain sailing with the UK’s 4 day work week trials. A district council has found itself in hot water over its trial. South Cambridgeshire District Council continue to be at the center of the dispute as their 4 day week trial's validity is debated.
The Council have been trialing a 4 day week now for over a year and have reported very positive improvements to performance and retention of staff as a result of the trial.
Up until now the government has asked that South Cambridgeshire District Council cease their trial, threatening them with financial penalties should they continue. The Council have continued their 4 day week policy despite the threats.
Local government minister Simon Hoare now says that they may have to introduce a law to stop the Council from working a 4 day week.
We will be watching this story develop over the coming months.

Transitioning to a shorter work week sounds like a no-brainer. The report on the UK's pioneering trial proves it requires thoughtful planning and a bit of creativity.

Technology will be a key ally, streamlining tasks to ensure productivity remains high even as work hours are reduced. Generative AI is at the center of the conversation around the 4 day work week becoming a reality for many organizations across the world.
And let's not forget the power of conversation – involving employees in the shift ensures that everyone's on board and adjustments can be made to suit different roles.
Can We Make the 4 Day Work Week a UK-wide Reality?
With each company that reports success from this bold experiment, the idea of a 4 day work week gains more traction. There's a growing sense that what once seemed a far-off dream could indeed become a widespread reality.
The journey there will involve cultural shifts, with society placing greater value on work-life balance, and legislative support to encourage or even mandate this change across industries.
When Will We All Be Working Less?
Predicting the arrival of a 4 day work week for all is tricky, akin to reading tea leaves. Yet, with the tide of public opinion turning, and more businesses proving it's possible to thrive with a condensed work week, change could come sooner than we think.
The fact of the matter is that we are already working 4 day work weeks, we are just wasting a lot of our time and energy on ineffective activities such as pointless meetings and projects that lead nowhere.
